100_1017Today we installed a 1500 gallon two compartment septic tank in Norton.  It took us a little longer than usual (about 4 hours from start to finish) because we had to connect two inlet lines and we also had to hand dig a long trench under some exterior stairs.  These four hours are the only time the homeowner can’t use water in the house.   Even though the two compartment tank adds about $500 to the cost of a new system, the added filtration is well worth the extra money.

100_1007[1]Over the past month we have fixed a handful of clogged inlet pipes in Norton and Mansfield.  This is a common problem when the septic pipe from the house to the septic tank isn’t installed correctly.  Many times when this pipe is installed the septic contractor doesn’t compact the dirt under the pipe and the pipe settles over time.  When the pipe settles it causes a low point in the pipe where grease and other solids build up over time, until one day it is totally clogged and the sewage backs up into the house.  Then we get the call, dig up the pipe and then correctly reinstall a new pvc pipe.

100_0980If you thought it was a good idea to mark a leaching chamber with a large rock, it isn’t!!  This homeowner came home and found that his concrete leaching chamber collapsed under the weight of a small boulder.  Now he has a much bigger problem on his hands.

100_0984This title 5 inspection in Attleboro went extremely well for us and the home owner.  When a property has a nice lawn we do everything we can to keep it that way.  We removed the sod first, placed all the dirt on a tarp, examined the d-box and finally put everything back the same way we found it.

100_0982The above picture is what we call a septic root snake.  If you plan on planting a tree next to your septic system, you should think again.  This particular system was only 12 years old and it failed a title 5 inspection because the roots of a nearby tree clogged all of the pipes in the leaching field.  If you are having any problems with your septic system, or need a routine septic tank pumping, and are located in the Mansfield, Norton, and Attleboro areas give us a call to set up an appointment.  We will be happy to help you with all of your septic system needs.

Our latest title 5 inspection in Norton passed by the skin of its teeth.  The Distribution box had moderate solid carryover and moderate to heavy concrete corrosion.   A zabel filter was added in the tank to minimize solid carryover in the future.  The concrete corrosion is normal for a system of this age.  Even though there was heavy corrosion, the d box was still structurally sound and showed no signs of leakage.100_0978

100_0976One way to secure steel covers to a septic tank is to use concrete.  This makes a water tight seal and locks them in place so no person or animal accidentally falls in.  Every title 5 inspection and new septic system installation in Norton requires steel covers to grade.  Covers to grade make septic tank pumping a much easier task.  Towns like Mansfield and Attleboro, also allow locking plastic septic tank covers.

While replacing our latest septic system in Norton, we ran into one of the best homeowner inventions I’ve seen.  This picture is of a home aeration unit designed to supply extra oxygen to the bacteria in the tank.   The homeowner was on the right idea, but a few other steps have to be taken to make the aerator effective.100_0945

100_0882This leaching field excavation was done in Attleboro, MA.  The hole is about 8′ deep and since we had to leave it sit over night and wait for an inspection by the town the next morning, the hole filled up with 3 feet of ground water.  We had to pump the hole for about an hour ,then scrape the bottom of the hole of any silty material and finally fill the hole with around 300 yards of septic sand.

100_0881Here is an example of a perfect looking distribution box.  This d-box was opened up on one of our recent title 5 inspections in Norton.  If you have to do a title 5 inspection on your septic system, this is what you want to see.
