It looks like this leaching field is your typical stone and pipe configuration, but it is far from that. The 1 1/2″ stone seen in the picture is not being used for its leaching capabilities, but for its structural integrity. This leaching field is comprised of 28 arc 36 leaching chambers and is abnormally deep. In order to avoid a pump system the local board of health granted a variance that allows the maximum cover over a leaching field to be increased from 3′ to 4′. The stone between the chambers to be buried deeper in the ground and thus saves the homeowner a considerable amount of money.
